Remarks: | Legend has it that during the year 1900 President Kruger sent the State Attorney, J.C. Smuts, to the Pretoria Mint to confiscate all available money to pay the troops. On his return it was discovered that there were partly formed gold coins amongst the others. These discs were however, the correct weight. There is no evidence as to the number of these pieces in existence. They are also referred to as ‘Kaal Ponde’ but more commonly known as ‘Rimless Blank Ponde’. |

Remarks: | Some blank pieces show fine scraper marks made by a scraping machine used in the Mint to reduce the weight of blanks which were too heavy. |
In 1900 the striking of the Kruger Pounds/Ponde were interrupted due to the advance of the British troops on Pretoria. All the available silver and gold, including pond blanks, were removed from the Mint and taken to Middelburg. Once all the minted coins were used up, some of these blanks were used to pay the troops. There are two varieties of these Ponde, namely the rimless/flat blank and the rimmed blank.
