Inscription: (A TINY FACE) ORANJE VRIJSTAAT (A TINY LION) [mint marks?]
Reverse: (1) Inscription enclosed within laurel wreath tied with ribbon below.

Obverse: (2) Obverse : Indented top & sides of the shield. Tree of liberty(flat topped) within shield. On either side of tree & below tree are ‘bugle horns’. Shield flanked left by palm tree branch and right by laurel branch. Tied at the bottom with a ribbon.
Inscription: GEDULD EN MOED (motto below shield on ribband) ORANJE VRYSTAAT (above) 1887 (below)
Reverse: (2) Laurel wreath encircling inscription tied at the bottom with a ribbon.
Inscription: 1 (above) KROON (centre) underlined – LLC- ESSAY below wreath.

Reverse: (3) Overstamped with the British East Africa Co. stamp. B.E.A.C. (dated) 1888.

Obverse: (1) (3) On a plain shield between three ‘bugle horns’, two in chief and one in base, a circle, in the upper two thirds a tree of liberty (orange tree) between three sheep left, and a lion, right. In the lower third an ox-wagon facing left.Shield flanked left by palm branch and right by laurel branch. Tied at the bottom with a ribbon. Below shield on a ribbon the motto GEDULD EN MOED.
Inscription: * ORANJE VRYJSTAAT * (above) 1888 (below wreath)
Reverse: (4) Oak branch left & laurel branch right flanking inscription. Tied at the bottom with a ribbon.
Inscription: 1 (above) PENNY (centre) underlined V (below wreath) PROBABLY ALL STRUCK AT THE BERLIN MINT.

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE PATTERNS 1889

Obverse: (1) Young Head of Queen Victoria facing left.
Inscription: VICTORIA D: G: BRITTANIAR: REG: F: D:
NB! The colons are close to the letters in the legend and the bump in the hairline, caused by the ribbon, is midway between the T & A in the inscription.

NB! The colons are midway between the letters in the legend and the bump in the hairline, caused by the ribbon, in the hairline is midway between the I & T in the legend.
Reverse: (1) Cape of Good Hope Arms. On a plain shield a lion rampant between the three annulets, in chief three roundels each charged with a fleur de lis. Crest: the seated female figure of Hope with a lamb and and anchor at her feet. The shield supported by two mythological antelope (supposed to be a black wildebeestleft and a gemsbok right). Below on a ribbon intertwined with laurel sprays, the motto Spes Bona. THE LONG HORN TYPE, where the horns of the right hand antelope protude deep into the legend between the D&H and the head of hope is between the G & O in the inscription.
Reverse: (1) Cape of Good Hope Arms. Similar to above but the horns and manes of the supporters differ, the distance of the inscription from the pearled border differs as does the figure of Hope.
THE SHORT HORN TYPE, where the horns of the right hand antelope protude into the legend almost touching the H and the head of Hope is directly below the first O of GOOD in the inscription
